Summer Safety For Your Pet

Beautiful weather means more time outside for you and your dog! It’s important to make sure your four-legged best friend is safe. Check out a few must-know tips:

Protect from pests
Ticks, mosquitoes, and other pests can harm both pet and owner. Protect your pup with the use of a medicated collar or pet-safe repellent.

Never leave your dog inside a parked car
Never leave your dog in an unattended vehicle, even if it is just for a few minutes with the windows down! Heat exhaustion can be deadly. If your dog is showing any or a combination of the signs below contact a local vet like Diamond Hill Animal Clinic (401-658-0751) immediately.

  • Excessive panting or drooling
  • Discoloration on gums or tongue
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness or lethargic behavior

Beach trips with your dog
The beach is a great place to let your dog play! Make sure your beach permits pets and keep them on a leash if they are not fully command-trained. While you are there, be mindful of the sun. Did you know that dogs can get sunburns too? If a dog has a thin or light-colored coat they can easily burn. Ask your vet to recommend pet safe sunscreen.

Pool PAWty!
Always have fresh water available to your dog to prevent dehydration. Even better, give them their very own pool! So they have a place to cool off and drink all summer long.

Wishing you and your dog a beautiful and fun summer in Rhode Island!
