Pumpkins with Personality

By | Inside Rhody, Uncategorized, Whats Happening | No Comments

What do you get when you combine a passion for Halloween and sculpture? 3D pumpkin carvings!

Since childhood, I have loved all things Halloween: the costumes, the movies, and especially carving the annual Jack-O-Lantern. While studying sculpture at UMass Dartmouth in 2014 I decided to take my figure modeling experience to a new medium, using my great grandfather’s wood carving gouges, I sculpted my first 3D pumpkin. Since then I have carved over a dozen pumpkins each season. After a while, I noticed myself getting better and pulling more personality from the pumpkin each time!

Over the years, I have had the opportunity to showcase my carving skills to 1000s of people! Some of my career highlights were displaying at Rhode Island’s own “Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular” at Roger Williams Park Zoo, and demoing for “Rise of the Jack-O-Lanterns” in Boston and on Governor’s Island in NYC. Most weekends in October, you can find me carving at local farms across New England.

Far from two triangles eyes cut out with a kitchen knife, my unique pumpkins turn heads on spectators of all ages. People who see my pumpkins often wonder where I get the inspiration for some of the wacky faces I carve. Now the secret’s out! I always keep a mirror close by when working on a pumpkin. I’ll make a ridiculous face in the mirror and then mimic it in the carving. There truly is a piece of me that goes into each and every carve.

One of my favorite parts about working with pumpkins as my medium is the short life of my creations. After I complete a crave I will document it through photos then let mother nature take over. I’ve found squirrels are huge fans of my work! Each year brings the opportunity for bigger and better carves…

If you’re reading this thinking you could never make something like that, you are wrong! With a few simple tools and enough practice you too can carve 3D pumpkins! Grab your friends, book a private class for up to 10 people, and see what you’re capable of.

Least Among Saints – An Inspiring Story of Compassion & Service

By | Inside Rhody, Uncategorized, Whats Happening | No Comments

LEAST AMONG SAINTS ~ Runtime 1 hr, 7 min.
Rating: R (Language)
Written & Directed by Martin Papazian
Produced by Robert A. Papazian & James G. Hirsch

Cast: Martin Papazian, Tristan Lake Leabu, Audrey Marie Anderson, AJ Cook, Azura Skye, Tom Irwin, Taylor Kinney, Lombardo Boyer, Ronnie Gene Blevins, with Laura San Giacomo and Charles S. Dutton.

In a trying time for many people across Rhode Island, the United States, and the entire world, it is not uncommon to look to film and other forms of entertainment for inspiration and hope. For those looking for an uplifting story of positivity, kindness, and goodness in the face of adversity, we highly recommend watching Least Among Saints.

Least Among Saints is the story of a struggling veteran’s journey to redemption through his service to an orphaned child. It is a moving tale with important messages that are highly relevant to society today. The film focuses heavily on human compassion, healing through others, and overcoming mental health struggles (in this case, PTSD). It also highlights the difficulties faced by some veterans after returning from combat.

Returning home to an uncertain future, combat veteran Anthony Hayward (Martin Papazian) believes there is no hope for himself. Yet when a troubled young neighbor, Wade (Tristan Lake Leabu), calls out for help, Anthony cannot turn away. To the dismay of the boy’s social worker (Laura San Giacomo) and an unlikely friend in the Chief of Police (Charles S. Dutton), Anthony sets out on a fool’s quest to help this heartbroken and hard-to-reach child find his long-lost father. In the midst of this new mission – the first that seems to matter since his return – Anthony begins to come to grips with both the costs of war and the universal power of human connection.

Martin “Marty” Papazian did much more than star as Anthony in “Least Among Saints.” The triple-threat also wrote and directed the film and has had a hand in creating a number of movies and TV Shows since. The film itself carries even more weight when considering Papazian’s background. The values of selfless service to others are so important to

him that he became a full-time paramedic/firefighter, currently fighting the wildfires that are devastating California.

When watching Least Among Saints, the message of serving others clearly comes from an honest place as it is told by a person who lives by those same values. Papazian’s own acting as well as moving performances from Tristan Lake Leabu, Laura San Giacomo, and Charles S. Dutton add to the story Papazian is telling through this film and bring its positive messages and values to life.
