By | events, Inside Rhody, Whats Happening | No Comments

Historical Wickford is located in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, and it was settled in 1637 by Roger Williams. Its name originates from Wickford in Essex, England. Remaining one of the biggest tourist attractions in Rhode Island, it is now home to various restaurants and boutiques. Notable restaurants in Wickford are Wickford on the Water, Tavern by the Sea, and Shayna’s Place. Although the food and shopping are a hit, the Wickford Art Festival is the pinnacle event of the summer that unites all Rhode Island residents.

The Wickford Art Festival is an annual event that began in 1962 by the Wickford Art Association. Various artists set up throughout the streets of Wickford, showcasing their work for potential buyers. This year, the festival was held on July 10-11 in a different location, Wilson Park. 180 different artists are showcased, their work varying from ceramics, to jewelry, glass, painting, photography, and so much more! This variety of artwork is a prime example of the artistic community within Rhode Island, as well as the diverse collection of work that meets in Wickford each year.

The Ultimate Outdoor Living Space

By | Inside Rhody, outdoors, service, Whats Happening | No Comments

What do you get when you combine warm summer nights, the ambiance of a roaring fire, and picturesque landscaping? A personal escape right in your backyard!

The best part about a backyard project is you can make it as unique and elaborate as your imagination (and budget) will allow! Here are a few things to consider when designing your backyard oasis:

  • Who will you share this space with? If it’s just an intimate space for you and your family, a small seating area should suffice. For entertaining guests at large gatherings consider creating an outdoor kitchen featuring a wrap-around bar.
  • When will you spend time in your space? If you envision spending Sunday afternoons in the warm sun you may want to add some shade with a pergola or awning. If summer nights are your go-to, ambient lighting is a must! Opt for hanging bistro lights or solar-powered lights to illuminate your walkway.
  • Do you want ongoing maintenance? If you enjoy the labor of love that is maintaining your landscape then opt for plenty of plants and grass. If you prefer a low-maintenance set up consider installing a large patio. The same goes for choosing your materials! Wood needs care every few years, such as repairing rot and restaining while vinyl will last a lifetime maintenance-free.
  • Do you want to tend to a fire? Some people love the process of building the perfect campfire, but if ease of use is more your speed, opt for a propane firepit.
  • Know your yard! If you have a septic system, make sure you do not compromise it by building on it. If you have low spots in your yard that tend to collect water, avoid building there and do not build in an area that will promote drainage towards your home.

RetroBlast-Rocky Point

By | Inside Rhody, RetroBlast, Whats Happening | No Comments

Rocky Point State Park has been a beloved public attraction in Rhode Island since the mid-1800s. The property has been a location for many attractions including a clam shack, hotel, concerts, and most notably as The Rocky Point Amusement Park. The park operated from the late 1840s until its closing in 1994. During the 1950s to the 1990s, Rocky Point Amusement Park was a popular tourist destination in Rhode Island. The park featured rides including the Log Flume, Corkscrew Loop Roller Coaster, Skyliner, and The Freefall, which would fall 13 stories at 55 miles per hour! The Shore Dinner Hall, which closed in 2000, was famous for its clam cakes, lobster, manhattan style clam chowder, and steamers. In addition to amusement rides, Rocky Point hosted concerts! Performances included Janis Joplin, AC/DC, Jane’s Addiction, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and much more!

In the 1990s Rocky Point’s financial situation became unstable. This, unfortunately, led the park to close in 1994. However, in 1996, Rocky Point opened its doors one last time to say farewell to its loyal patrons. Although the amusement park is gone, Rocky Point still lives on in the memories and hearts of Rhode Island residents, through movies, books, and much more!

In 2003, Rocky Point was purchased, and demolition began shortly after. 8 years later, it became a state park. When visiting, you can find the upper and lower stations for the Skyliner gondola ride, ruins of an old water tank, and an arch by the entrance. The amusement park may be gone, but its skeletons still remain. Rocky Point State Park is a great place to go on your next family walk, bike ride, or even to watch the beautiful sunrise! Relive your old memories today at Rocky Point State Park!
