Enjoy a waterfront dining experience in RI

By | food, Inside Rhody, restaurant | No Comments

With the recent changes to the lockdown regulations in Rhode Island, locals are now able to get out of the house and enjoy outdoor dining in the Ocean State! Now is the time to provide support to businesses who need it the most. Although the seating arrangement may be a little different, the food is still delicious! Here are just a few of our favorite places to visit:

BLU On The Water | East Greenwich

For waterfront dining on Greenwich Bay, it’s hard to beat BLU On The Water. With fresh, local seafood delivered daily, a variety of non-seafood options, and lots of delicious cocktails, it’s hard to leave BLU feeling blue! Not only does BLU On The Water offer a great dining experience, but the atmosphere is fantastic. They have deck seating sitting right on a bustling marina as well as glass fire pits, tornado torches and of course, amazing views!

Matunuck Oyster Bar | South Kingstown

This Rhode Island classic takes the phrase “from farm to table” to another level, offering “pond to plate dining.” Matunuck Oyster Bar grows its very own oysters in Potter Pond right in front of their waterfront patio! Many of the vegetables and herbs they serve are grown in their own vegetable garden as well. These efforts to serve locally-sourced and incredibly-fresh foods create an amazing dining experience with fantastic food. Their raw bar is one of the most famous in Rhode Island. If you are looking for a dining experience with exceptional service and incredible food, consider this!

Coast Guard House | Narragansett

This beautiful stone building serves up more than just scenic views of Narragansett Bay but offers incredible dining and service. After a recent refresh due to Super Storm Sandy, this popular Rhode Island destination has added an updated and upscale look while still honoring the building’s history that dates back to the 1800s. For locally harvested seafood cooked to perfection paired with an outstanding overall experience, the Coast Guard House is a great choice for your next big night out.

Chelo’s Waterfront Bar & Grille | Warwick

Chelo’s Waterfront offers great food and waterfront views at affordable prices. Chelo’s is famous for its chowder and desserts and it’s a great place to take the whole family. They often feature live entertainment on the weekends! Offering a raw bar and a good selection of seafood, Chelo’s waterfront is a great place to go for a more affordable waterfront dining experience.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!

If you ask Steve Filippou, owner of Rhode Island’s Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant, what makes his business different from the rest, with no hesitation, he says “our team.” Especially over the past couple of months, his dedicated and tireless team is has been the backbone of his business through these unexpected and troubling times. No business is ever prepared enough for a tragedy like COVID-19, but Twisted Pizza has been able to fight through with the help of their dedicated staff.

Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant is a family-run business with 6 locations throughout the Ocean State. They pride themselves on preparing a memorable dining experience for every customer they serve with their fresh ingredients, large menu, and courteous employees. They serve a variety of items such as pizzas, pastas, salads, sandwiches and seafood dishes. They even have some of the most incredible appetizers, like their buffalo chicken wings and calamari. It is the perfect spot to grab a refreshing beer and tasty dinner for a very reasonable price. But the reason for Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant’s success over the years has been from one of its greatest assets – the staff.

From the moment you step inside any of their locations, you feel so welcomed and appreciated. The service is unlike the rest, and the employees are happy to be there. This has not changed a bit, even though it has been a crazy couple of months. The staff has been on top of their game in every way possible, arriving early, working long hours and keeping a smile on their face from the beginning to the end of their shift. From the crew in the back making the pizzas, to the employees answering the endless phone calls and delivering the meals, their work ethic has been tremendous.

“I am so thankful for their hard work and for pulling through and not bailing ship during these tough times,” Filippou said.

Not only is Fillipou thankful for his hardworking employees, he is also appreciative of his distributors. Over the past couple of weeks, there have been numerous food shortages and shipping has been delayed, but the distributors have stood by them and made sure they had the products they needed to stay in business and serve their customers.

When the restaurant industry experienced an immense decline and had no option than to go completely contactless, it was difficult to tell how it would affect their business. Steve Fillipou cannot express his gratitude for the amazing customers and their constant support.

“They have stood behind us from the very beginning and their support has meant the world to us,” he said. “From the shout outs on social media to the generous tips, they have been incredible.”

Their support is fully recognized and Twisted Pizza is so grateful for a caring community.

If you would like to order from Twisted Pizzeria and Restaurant, visit gettwistedpizza.com or call one of their 6 locations. They are open for business and ready to serve you a delicious meal!

Barrett’s Garden, LLC

By | food, Inside Rhody

GLUTEN-FREE, VEGAN, DELICIOUS—AND SKYROCKETING

Liz Barrett has been resourceful and self-reliant throughout her career. So when it came time to share her vegan delights, she jumped in with both feet. Starting out with cashew-based products designed to substitute for parmesan and ricotta cheeses (and called “Farmesan” and “Fauxcotta”), she’s been a big hit on the farmers market circuit. Early success and education at the Hope & Main food incubator fueled her confidence and helped her to launch Barrett’s Garden, LLC. Targeting healthy retail food chains, Barrett’s items are now available at retail (including several Whole Foods locations in RI and MA) and wholesale outlets throughout New England and major health food distributors are asking for product.

Due to this early success, Barrett needed to secure her own dedicated kitchen and add staff to keep up with demand. She worked with the RISBDC to secure a loan from Navigant Credit Union. These funds enabled her to buy equipment, invest in marketing and secure a state- of-the-art kitchen where she develops products that are “healthy, minimal, GMO-free, and without fillers”, according to the Barrett’s Garden website. Barrett, who also received RISBDC assistance for streamlining her QuickBooks accounting system, is well-positioned for growth.

Barrett is a true asset to the state’s small business community. She has not only developed a dairy-free, gluten-free kitchen and local job opportunities but also sources supplies and services from Rhode Island-based companies whenever possible.

Her company has recently been presented with several exciting growth opportunities that could have a significant positive impact on the operation. Barrett says, “I would not be here without the help of the RISBDC. Dennis [McCarthy, Northern RI Center Director] has made my journey so much more successful than if I was alone. Thank you so much.” Learn more about Barrett’s Garden, LLC by visiting their website at BarrettsGardenFoods.com. If you’re ready to start writing your business success story, attend one of our upcoming workshops or set up a free one-on-one counseling session. Register online at RISBDC.org today.

The Rhode Island Small Business Development Center at URI is part of a national network of nearly 1,000 business assistance centers that provide counseling and training to small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs. Taste Buds Kitchen

Little Rhody Is So Awesome!

Ann Wiard, owner of Taste Buds Kitchen (TBK) in East Greenwich, Rhode Island is all about having fun with people from ages 2 to 99 as they make delicious food and learn a valuable life skill.  People enjoy her cooking classes, celebrations (such as birthdays, showers, bachelorette parties, anniversaries and reunions) and corporate events.

Some of Ann’s favorite events included a:

Chef’s challenge as part of a corporate meeting in which teams competed to make the best Handmade Ravioli.

Birthday cooking and dance party for 6- and 7-year-old children which made Pizza and Unicorn Cupcakes.

A sushi party for adults.

Originally from Ohio, Ann spent a year in AmeriCorps in the DC area prior to moving to Rhode Island to manage a soup kitchen in Bristol, RI.  While managing the kitchen she earned her MBA at Providence College. After earning her MBA she chose combine her degree with her love of working with children, adults and cooking.  Purchasing a TBK franchise provided her with the opportunity to get started working with children and adults almost immediately, rather than needing to spend excessive amounts of time organizing the business.

Ann offers the following recommendations:

Parents (and spouses) of picky eaters:

Have the picky eaters find a new vegetable at the grocery store.  Once you return home have them help you  prepare it.

If the picky eaters don’t like something ask them why.  Was it the texture, the smell, the color, the sweetness or the spiciness?

Be sure to offer positive reinforcement and thank them for trying something new.   Ann reports that after she uses positive reinforcement in her cooking classes parents have said “I can’t believe you got my kid to eat butternut squash.  They even ask for it at home now.”

Try to get one picky eater (in a group) to try something new.  If they like it others will follow.

When planning events don’t overthink the details.  Don’t stress out over the small details.  Focus on having fun.

Do things together as a family.  Experiences may    provide better opportunities than buying gifts to create lifelong memories.

Please check out Ann’s website at https://tastebudskitchen.com/east-greenwich/.  For further information and recommendations please contact Ann by email (eastgreenwich@tastebudskitchen.com) or by telephone (401.885.0535).  Ann will be pleased to speak with you about food, cooking classes and special events.

I would like to thank Industrial Consultant Dr. Margarita Posada Cossuto for helpful comments.
