Protect Your Pets from the Cold

By | health, Inside Rhody | No Comments

The winter months are upon us and it’s important to remember to care for your furry friend! As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to watch over your pet and protect them from harsh weather conditions. Here are some ways to keep your pet safe!

Time How Long They Are Outside

Most pets love to play in the snow, so be sure to let them play for a little while. Make sure to limit their exposure to the cold, though. Know when it is time to bring your pet back into the warmth of your home!

Don’t Shave Them

Animals don’t have the luxury to put on layers when they are feeling cold. All they have is their fur! During the winter months, don’t shave your pet, or else they will be cold!

Let Your Pets Inside

Some owners prefer to keep their pets outside all day, not allowing the animal inside of their home. We ask you to reconsider, and let your pet inside during these harsh months. Exposure to the cold is incredibly unhealthy and potentially fatal for an animal.

Wipe Down Their Paws

After a playful time outside, make sure you wipe down your pet’s paws, or else they will be slipping and sliding all around the house!

Stay Healthy This Winter

By | health, Inside Rhody | No Comments

With heavy snow comes potential injuries! When you’re out shoveling or snow blowing this winter, it is important to follow protocol to avoid slips, falls, and other harm. To help you out, here are some ways to protect yourself this winter!

Proper Posture

Proper shoveling posture can really help minimize aches, pains, and other more serious issues — especially with back pain! Keep the shovel close to your body, using your legs for pushing the snow instead of throwing it. Throwing it requires heavy lifting, and the goal is to make sure you aren’t over-flexing your spine! To do this, keep your back straight.

Warm Up

Stretching prior to shoveling is important! While shoveling is not a sport, it does require physical endurance. Loosening up your body will help protect you from serious injuries. Even taking an anti-inflammatory before shoveling can help ease any soreness!

Start Early

Choose the best time to begin shoveling. People most commonly shovel after the snow has built up. This can cause the snow to become heavy, and heavy lifting can make you more prone to injury! If you can help it, try to shovel when the snow is at its lightest. This, of course, means you will have to shovel more times during the day, but your body will thank you!

Take care of your body

Keeping your body warm is essential to avoiding injuries. Be sure to bundle up before taking on the cold air. Stay hydrated as well, drinking plenty of water prior to taking your first few steps outside.

Fall Foot Care

By | health, Inside Rhody | No Comments

Summer is coming to an end and your feet need extra love heading into the cooler seasons ahead! Follow these care tips to avoid injury and keep your feet in healthy condition.

Try on your Fall shoes.
It’s time to pack up the flip flops and sandals and bring out the seasonal boots and sneakers! Make sure your shoes fit properly and support your foot type to avoid injury and future foot problems.

Take a break from nail polish.
Now that your feet are hidden, take a break from painting your toenails. The constant chemicals from the polish can cause discoloration to the nail and deteriorate the nail bed.

Exfoliate, soak, and moisturize!
Integrate a weekly foot care routine. First, dry exfoliate your feet to prevent cracking in your skin and leave them feeling baby smooth. Next, soak your feet in a warm bath to soothe the stress and soreness of your feet. Finally – hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! After the harsh heat of the summer sun and the cooler months approaching, it is crucial to keep your feet moisturized to avoid dryness and pain.

Take precautions when exercising.
Always warm up your feet before jumping into exercising – start off with easy, non-impact movements. Stretching before and after exercising and building your foot and ankle muscles are key to prevent strain and injury.

Dental RI

How well do you think your oral care is? We all know the basic tips for having a bright smile; Brush, and floss, twice a day and, use mouthwash. However, there are some uncommon tips that you might not know. This month, Dental RI would like to share these dental tips to help keep your smile clean and bright!

  1. Dentists Recommend Using A Toothbrush With Soft Bristles
    1. It is recommended that you use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Too much pressure and aggressive brushing can negatively impact your enamel and gums.
  2. The Proper Brushing Technique
    1. The proper brushing technique is to brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Gently move the brush back and forth in short strokes. Remember to brush all surfaces including, the outer, inner, and chewing surfaces of your teeth.
  3. Avoid A Dry Mouth By Drinking Water
    1. Bacteria loves a dry mouth, as it has the ability to thrive. To combat this, drink lots of water to stay hydrated.
  4. Rinse Your Floss
    1. It is very important to floss after brushing your teeth. Make sure to rinse your floss after flossing each tooth or use a different portion. If you don’t, you’re basically just transferring bacteria to a different tooth – you wouldn’t want that!
  5. Foods That Help
    1. The right foods can actually help your oral health! Coconut oil is great for your teeth. The coconut oil attacks the harmful bacteria living in your mouth. It can reduce plaque buildup, prevent tooth decay, and gum disease. Plus, it tastes great! Many kinds of toothpaste come with it as an active ingredient.

We love helping our patients get and keep shiny smiles. If you need more care or are searching for a new dentist, come talk to Dental RI! Dr. Dawn Gallucci is now accepting new patients. She is a trusted dental professional who has been serving Rhode Island for many years and would love to help you!

Become the Best Version of You!

By | fitness, health, Inside Rhody, Whats Happening | No Comments

Staying healthy is more than just making it to the gym and eating healthy, it’s a shift to a better mindset and good habits! Donna Savage, of Empower Fitness, has 5 tips to get you started. Pick just one to start this week and you are already on your way to becoming the best version of you!

1.) Make the most of your time

Waiting for the water to boil or the oven to preheat? Squeeze in a few exercises! Use water bottles or soup cans for easy and convenient weights when you have a quick break. Small habits like this will turn into permanent changes that will help you reach a healthy lifestyle.

2.) Stay hydrated

The key to having glowing skin, more energy, a better mood, and even weight loss is making sure you are drinking enough water. If you are having trouble staying hydrated, try carrying a water bottle around with you all day, drinking one glass before each meal, or infusing it with fruits! Shoot for half of your body weight in ounces daily.

3.) Have a positive mindset

How you think is how you act and positive thoughts translate into success. Start your day off with positive affirmations, focus on the good rather than the bad, live in the moments, and surround yourself with people who lift you up. These simple changes will help you to have a better mindset and live a healthier and happier life!

4.) Listen to your body

If you are overworked and sore, don’t push it! This could lead to further injury or harm to your muscles. Staying consistent is great but it is important to listen to your body and take a rest if needed, you deserve it!

5.) Be sure to catch those ZZZs

Sleep is the time for your body to rest and recover and not getting enough is harmful to your overall health. The average adult needs about 7-9 hours per night in order to feel awake and alert the next day. Make sure to have a comfortable and quiet space to ensure you can get your best sleep.

How to Choose the Right Hiking Shoe

By | fitness, health, Inside Rhody | No Comments

When trying any new activity, it’s easy to get ahead of yourself and hiking is no different! Spring has sprung and for many people, the great outdoors are calling.

After spending so much time inside, tons of hikers will be hitting the trails for a little fresh air. But with rocky terrain and uneven surfaces comes the potential for foot and ankle injuries. The first step towards preventing these injuries is making sure you wear the right shoes. That’s why we created this handy guide to choosing the right hiking boots for you.

Don’t Overdo the Shoe!

With so many options to choose from, it’s easy to pick the wrong type of shoe for the job! These tips REI.com will get you started in the right direction.

Trail running shoes or supportive sneakers are perfectly fine for short and simple hikes with even terrain and smooth trails.

Low-cut hiking shoes with a flexible mid-sole are the perfect fit for day trips with light packs or no packs at all. They are a good choice when dealing with moderate rockiness and uneven terrain.

Day hiking boots offer more support than low cut shoes to deal with unstable ground and rougher terrain. If you plan on carrying a lighter backpack and going for a day trip, these are likely the best shoe for you.

Backpacking boots are the way to go if you plan on hiking with a heavy load on a multi-day trip into the wilderness.

Materials matter

For hiking shoes and boots, different materials offer different benefits. These tips from Active.com will help you make the right choice.

Synthetics are often light and breathable but less durable than other materials. They dry quickly when they’re wet, but they’re not very water-resistant.

Split-Grain Leather boots and shoes are a good middle ground as they are partially made of leather and partially made of synthetic materials. Split-grain leather boots are often more durable than synthetic shoes but less breathable. At the same time, these boots are often more breathable than full-grain leather but less durable.

Full-grain leather boots are typically the most durable and the most waterproof. However, they are often less breathable and heavier.

Remember that accidents can still happen – even if you’re wearing the perfect shoes. If you find yourself with an injured ankle after slipping while hiking, you need to consult the experts! The Foot & Ankle Institute of New England is here to mend injuries across all of Rhode Island- there’s nothing below the knee they can’t handle! Rhode Island on the Brain

By | health, Inside Rhody | No Comments

Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation was established in February 2008 by Dr. Prakash Sampath, MD, FAANS of the RI Neurosurgical Institute This was his response to address the concern of Rhode Island patients and their families when they receive the diagnosis of a potential brain or spine tumor.

The mission of the Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation (RIBSTF) is to provide comprehensive support to those individuals, and families and to enhance their quality of life by providing education, spiritual and financial support, as well as to assist those who conduct research and wish to study in this field. The Rhode Island Brain and Spine Tumor Foundation collaborates with other local and national foundations that serve similar missions. Our purpose is 100% charitable.

The RIBSTF achieves its mission with support received through many different avenues. A complimentary support group that is led by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker meets monthly in Providence. Support is provided in a casual, relaxed setting to brain and spine tumor patients, their loved ones and caregivers. On occasion, we may have a guest speaker who may be able to provide helpful information and discuss new topics which may range from new treatments to estate planning.

RIBSTF also has hosted an “Ask The Experts” event. The panel consists of several physicians and professionals from the community which represent a comprehensive team that a patient and their family would encounter throughout their treatment.

RIBSTF also hosts several fundraising events throughout the year. Our events this year are being significantly impacted due to the Worldwide pandemic of COVID-19. The RIBSTF continues to provide support to those in need and will continue to plan and execute fundraising events such as our annual Gala “Faces of Hope”. RIBSTF will be hosting several events to include all age groups and raise awareness.

As many foundations and organizations do, RIBSTF also engages the community as well as small and large businesses alike to support our mission. The businesses and residents of Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts continue to be extremely generous by providing financial support for our fundraisers, as well as material items that are utilized for silent auctions and raffles.

As the RIBSTF continues to move forward and grow, we set new goals and strive to achieve them. Last years’ goal was to launch the Dr. Scott Wang Patient Assistance Fund. With 12 years of service to the Rhode Island community, the RIBSTF has proudly assisted patients. Our goal continues to be to support those who are afflicted with brain and spine tumors and to assist them through the most difficult of times with heartfelt compassion while we continue to raise awareness.

If you or someone you know may be interested in the services provided by the RIBSTF or would like more information about how you can help, please contact us at 401-272-4177 or visit our website at http://www.ribstf.org/
If you would like to contribute to our foundation, checks should be made payable to: RIBSTF and mailed to RIBSTF, 118 Dudley Street, Providence RI 02905

Hope and Harmony: Holistic Health and Healing, LLC

By | health, Inside Rhody

Denise Dacier, owner of Hope and Harmony: Holistic Health and Healing, LLC, always knew she was a healer and
that her life’s purpose is to help people. A registered nurse since 2004 and a nurse practitioner since 2013, she is now actively pursuing a certification in holistic nursing through the American Holistic Nurses Association. For Denise, the holistic nursing designation is a step toward further aligning her professional practice with her personal philosophy.

Denise attended the RISBDC’s startup workshop, The Right Foot, in early 2018 when she was considering developing
a business that incorporated her holistic health philosophy. She found the workshop informative and learned the

“dos & don’ts” of business planning. With the support of RISBDC Central Rhode Island Director Amit Basnet, Denise launched her business in August of 2019. With a strong start, she has a growing clientele and continues to work with Amit on business development and marketing.

Holistic nursing is a practice that honors relationship- centered care and the interconnectedness of self, others, nature, and spirituality. With a goal of healing the whole person, it focuses on protecting, promoting and optimizing health and wellness, and incorporates complementary and alternative modalities.

Denise’s journey began when she started to explore yoga and Reiki as ways to combat the increasing stress of working in today’s healthcare field. She was so transformed by her experiences that she decided to enter into a holistic professional program and is now a Certified Usui and Shamballa Reiki Master/Teacher. She also loves working

with her gemstones, crystals, essential oils, herbs and her cards as an Intuitive Reader. Denise describes herself as a lifelong learner and reports that her personal self-healing experiences, along with her professional background working with individuals of all races, genders, and ages during times of stress and crises, benefit those seeking assistance on their own healing journeys.

Hope and Harmony describes its services as promoting spiritual and self development which lead to a more tranquil and balanced life. “We help you to process negativity so that you are able to focus on bringing the highest vibrations into your life,” says Denise. “Book a session today to experience an energy healing treatment that will leave you feeling relaxed and re-energized!”
